What is Android?

Android is an open source operating system from Google and it has been slowly spreading over the past few years into the mobile smart phone market place. More recently the growth and exposure of Android has increased dramatically as a large number of mobile manufacturers have adopted it, and is now viewed as a direct competitor with the Apple iOS system as found on the iPhone, the touch and more recently the iPad.

It is no coincidence that Android is now appearing in an increasing number of tablet computers provided by other manufacturers such as Dell, Samsung, Archos, Acer etc.

The platform supports the use of geolocation and augmented reality where the device can provide those features, and this can lead to new ways of using and imagining data in the real world.

With recent announcements from Google about Google TV soon being able to support Android applications, it can be seen that the Android platform is becoming pervasive and provides a solid platform on which to build truly innovative applications which link the web, personal communications and entertainment.
